International Medicine Rotation Elective

We are committed to facilitating international experiences for those that are interested.

An elective in international medicine is available to our second and third year residents. The rotation can be up to a maximum of one month (one block) duration. During the elective, the residency continues to provide liability insurance and the usual benefits. Some funds are budgeted to assist with the costs of the rotation (travel and living expenses), but we cannot make a specific guarantee.

A number of our faculty members have served abroad and we are happy to be able to match residents with the type of experience they are looking for (language preference, urban vs. rural, etc.).

There are a few guidelines. The first is that the resident must be supervised by a qualified physician on site who will be responsible to submit an evaluation of the resident’s performance. The second is that the resident must be directly involved in patient care or research (no observerships). The third is that the resident must complete the assigned reading prior to the rotation (some of which is general reading and some is specific to the location of the rotation). At the end of the rotation the resident shares his experience (either a presentation or a paper). The last guideline is that the location cannot be a high risk area. We have a lot invested in our residents and want them to return safely.

Our residents have visited the following locations for their International Medicine Rotation.
