Medical Student Electives

At Memorial Hospital we are pleased to offer a variety of 4th year electives. These course offerings are available in a wide range of medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Special electives can be developed at the request of the student and with approval from the Department Chairman.

Each student accepted for the Senior Elective Program at Memorial Hospital is provided housing and meals in the Staff Dining Room. Here is a list of currently available electives and their educational Directors.

4th Year Family Medicine Elective
(weeks may occur in any order)

  • 4th Year Family Medicine Elective is available to all medical students.
  • Indiana University Elective Number is 71YF713

 

Week One - Medicine Service

  • Admit and follow patients with the Chief as the overseer/back-up with not more than one patient per day or three total
  • Present patients in rounds
  • Treated just like a resident except all order and notes must be co-signed by the chief and no new patients after 3:00 pm
  • Spend one night on call with a resident
  • Attend all noon conferences

 

Week Two – Pediatric and Family Medicine Clinic

  • Rounds in the morning with pediatrics team
  • Work up all patients along with pediatrics resident until 5:00 pm
  • After rounds, and when not working up a patient, spend time at the Family Medicine Clinic seeing patients as assigned by a senior resident or faculty member
  • Student will have one night on call with a resident
  • Attend all noon conferences

 

Week Three – Obstetrics

  • Spend one week with on call residents including one 24-hour shift on call
  • Attend all teaching sessions
  • May assist or observe in surgery
  • Should be given at least two opportunities for deliveries
  • Opportunity to spend off days at the Family Medicine Clinic - optional
  • Attend all noon conferences

 

Week Four – Community Family Medicine and Sports Medicine

  • Variable time spent between Family Medicine Clinic,Sports Medicine Institute and South Bend Center for the Homeless
  • Flexible time to spend on a particular service
  • Attend all noon conferences
